sacred spaces

by Angie Calderon, Michael Jarrott and Zac Norris
Our mapping showcases some of Mart residents’ stories about cherished places in town. We were fortunate to be able to find three residents in three locations on a single day, listening to an hour’s worth of tales from each. We sat with Paxton King Littlepage in his entryway listening to historical accounts of East Texas Highway, arrived at Sue Davis’ house just in time to hear about her world travels and see the garden her husband built for her, and happened upon Muhsana and her family as they packed up their belongings at Chambless field to leave for their home in Senegal. The emotional experience of an interviews was the ultimate driving factor that led us to create a booklet of our impressions of Mart’s sacredness. We wrote an interpretive, narrative account of the interviews to accompany our photographs.

An interactive version of the above sacred spaces book would allow the site to grow as more stories, photographs and audio clips of interviews were added.
